September kicked off with WOMENS HEALTH WEEK so what better time to chat about how Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture can help with women's health issues then now?
Working with women’s health, I see and treat a lot of hormonal, fertility and general womens health issues. This can range from PMS to dysmenorrhea (period pain), menstrual issues like amenorrhoea (lack of menstruation), heavy bleeding, infertility and more. Did you know that Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can be extremely helpful for women’s health issues? From evening out cycles and regulating hormones all the way through to preparing for pregnancy and labour. It really is amazing!
Let’s have a look at a few of the conditions that Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can help treat.
MENSTRUAL ISSUES : Many women experience some sort of dysfunction menstruation - either cramping, bloating, irregular periods or PMS. Even though we are taught from early on that this is normal, Chinese Medicine has taught me that any kind of dysfunction is irregular. This is something that women deal with EVERY MONTH so why not make it as pleasant as possible? If you experience any signs of discomfort or irritation during your period it might be time to see your Acupuncturist. No matter the Western diagnosis, Acupuncture can help.
ENDOMETRIOSIS : It's become known recently that up to 1 in 10 Australian women have Endometriosis? And that’s just the ones that have been diagnosed! This condition has a serious impact on women’s lives - including pain, digestive issues, depression and problems with fertility. From a treatment perspective, Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can really help! From regulating your flow, to decreasing pain and even helping with fertility, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine has something to offer.
INFERTILITY : Did you realise that Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can be helpful when you’re experiencing infertility? Many of the issues that we’ve already spoken about (endometriosis or menstruation issues) can be a cause of infertility. Just as Acupuncture is good for those conditions, it can help to increase your chances of conceiving. Acupuncture is even a good option if you’re using IVF as it has been shown to significantly increase your chance of conceiving. In fact, recent studies have shown that Acupuncture can increase a woman’s IVF success rate by 65%.
PREGNANCY CARE : Acupuncture is a fantastic treatment modality during pregnancy. It’s a super gentle and effective treatment that will help guide you through growing your brand new tiny human. Acupuncture can help you with the nausea of the first few weeks, the back pain that begins to pop up later on, all the way to turning a breach baby and prepping your body for labour. It’s even fantastic after you’ve given birth to help your body realign itself and to increase breast milk. Have you had Acupuncture during pregnancy before? I’m pretty sure anyone who has had a session finished up looking and feeling as fabulous as Beyonce.
GENERAL ALL-ROUND CARE : even if you don’t experience any kinds of menstrual issues and you’re not pregnant (and you don’t want to be) Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can still be super helpful for you. If you experience headaches, digestive issues, sleep troubles or you generally have aches and pains there is a treatment for you. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine work to soothe out your kinks and regulate your nervous/endocrine systems. No matter the problem, we can help you!
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED? That really depends on the issue that you’re coming in with, the severity of the issue and how long you’ve been experiencing the problem. Most conditions that are acute (less than 3 months) only take a few treatments to sort out. Likewise conditions that you’ve been experiencing for years generally take longer.
WILL I NEED TO TAKE HERBS? Again, that depends on the severity of the condition and your presentation. So the short answer is sometimes yes, sometimes no. All herbal medicines are controlled by the TGA so are super safe.
